How to Import Reference Images in Aseprite

This is a memo on importing reference images into Aseprite.

Introduction

I wanted to import a reference image into Aseprite as an underlay layer.

Since I couldn't figure out how to do it immediately, I recorded the process here.

Importing a Reference Image in Aseprite

From the top menu in Aseprite’s editing screen:

Layer -> New... -> New Reference Layer from File

This allows you to import a reference image.

1. Click "Layer" from the top menu in Aseprite

2. Click "New Reference Layer from File" from "New..."

Here, select the image you want to import as a reference, and it will be added as a "Reference Layer".

Note that the Reference Layer is different from regular layers: cannot be edited.

3. Reference image imported as a Reference Layer

Conclusion

That was a quick memo on how to import reference images into Aseprite as a Reference Layer.

I hope this helps someone!
